Source : myoldmac.netHow to read the Macintosh Serial Number ?
If you have problems reading the serial number because the 0 (number) and O (letter) look very same in the number, read the following informations:
We use The serial number C 631 0R0 M0001AP as a reference.
The first C indicates the Mac in question was made in Cork, Ireland.
At this location you can not find a numerical 0.
Here a list of Factorys:
# F: Fremont, California, USA
# CK or C: Cork, Ireland
# SG or E: Singapore
# FC: Fountain, Colorado, USA
The first numerical character indicates the last digit of the year of production. In all cases prior to the Mac Plus, this will be in the 1980s. Referring back to our example again, we see that the Mac with serial number C 631 0R0 M0001AP was made in 1986. On this location you can find a numeric 0 because 68k Macs where produced also in the 1990th, so a production year of 1990 is also realistic (but not for our Macintosh Plus).
You can not find a letter O at this location. You find the Apple production dates at this timeline.
The next two digits indicate the week of the year of production. In our example, we see that the Mac with serial number C 631 0R0 M0001AP was made in the 31st week of the year 1986. On this location you can find only numeric 0´s - indicating the first nine weeks of the year.
You can not find the letter O at this location.
The next three characters are a three-digit base-34 unique identifier. (The letters 'O' and 'I' were not used, presumably to avoid confusion with the numbers zero and one.) If we assume Apple began each week at 000, this identifier becomes an ordinal indicating the model's production order that week. Our example is number C 631 0R0 M0001AP. To convert this from base-34 to decimal indicates it is the 850th Mac produced in the 31 week of the year 1986 in Cork, Ireland.
On this location you can not find the letter ' O ' and ' I ' ,
but you can find the numbers 1 and 0 at this location.
The last part C 631 0R0 M0001AP is the model ID
indicating that our Mac is a European Macintosh Plus.
At this location you can only find numeric 0´s - you can not find the letter O.
